I used to ADORE the homeschool planning stages. Now that the boys are both in high school, I have very little to plan, and honestly...I REALLY MISS IT!! Even if we never even did all the stuff I planned, the planning part was so much fun. I love that they basically educate themselves now, but I miss the input!! :P

I knew we had lots in common Topsy!
I missed being 1st place for Siskiyou County with the word Mathematics. I spell how it sounds, though for some reason I can insert the proper letters. The gal reading words had a HEAVY Southern accent and pronounced it ath-A or UH-matics.... I added an A instead of an E.
Yep, try to not be too crazy here either since DH sucks at it and DS is following in footsteps.

I am such a spelling freak myself...even got to be on the Jerry Lewis telethon one year for being a state spelling champ!! :) Then...go figure...I have one kiddo with dyslexia who has serious spelling difficulties. It has truly given me perspective about trying not to judge people by their spelling proficiency!! :)

Thank you so much for visiting my blog. We did like T4L I'm not sure we could fit it in the budget next year or not but I will be considering it. I had used it for a while when my oldest was in I think 1st or 2nd. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I will have to look around as I have time. I found lots of cute ideas from some blog hopping, but two of my faves lately have been www.brownpaper--packages.blogspot.com

They all have yougn children so some of their ideas are great for little ones.

And yes on the bracelet thing..I kept thinking what I could have used other than the candy's...I'm sure there are even some kind of ring shaped candies, but it was very good practice for my five year old to learn how to tie a knot!

I can relate to this. I live in the country and with such a large family I don't go too many places so my online buddies are great to 'visit!" I do have 2 married out of my 12 so life isn't nearly as hectic as it used to be!!

My son never learned to spell well at school. Since we started homeschooling I shopped around for a good spelling curriculum. I found a great program called All About Spelling. It comes with flash cards, letter tiles, phonogram tiles, and a...n audio CD to demonstrate the correct pronounciation of all the sounds. The teachers manual has all the lessons in step by step form.

It is really good for Kinestetic learners. My son enjoys it so far. He's in 5th grade but I started him at Level 1 just after Christmas - I wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything important. I feel much better with this than what he had been doing in public school because it teaches all the phonetic rules systematically.

It is a HUGE decision. I honestly do not think that he can go back into a traditional public school and function. Hence the reason we are checking into better options. Homeschooling him thru high school is totally an option with my only concern being that I can do it good enough for him!

I remember 8th grade year for each of my boys as being a "preparation" time. In the end, they both chose to stay homeschooling, and we turned to a more unschoolish/interest-led approach which has really benefited them both well. Best of luck to you as you and your son make those big decisions!!

I got my college degree in writing, and I STILL don't find it an easy subject to homeschool. Mostly because it is a largely subjective subject, and to teach someone to write means to critique their attempts, and NO ONE likes to be critiqued. I always made sure to add journal-writing to each year's curriculum, because this was a writing assignment they could feel completely comfortable with because I would never even READ it...much less critique it!

I couldn't help but kinda freak out when our oldest started taking part of his coursework at the local community college. Having homeschooled from the get-go, I was SO nervous about how he would handle himself and the rigors of a classroom, but it seems that he has done marvelously and even got an A on his final project for the semester. These homeschoolers turn out just fine! ;)

thanks for your kind comment on my blog. I just read this post and it's funny because I haven't had kids in public school to know what they are or aren't teaching, but just out of habit we have geography lessons once in awhile and I'm teaching my 1st grader a song with the 50 states. I actually teach a music class and we are learning the song in there as well....although I was pleasantly suprised to find out most of them already knew the 50 nifty state song.

I don't worry about whether my child has the knowledge in her head to take the standardized tests. I worry that she will freak out because of it being timed, or she will see some facinating nature thing happening outside of the window, and waste her time. Or maybe that she starts drawing this awesome dragon, and she comes out of the test with this fantastic doodle and no bubbles filled in! We don't have to participate in the testing for a couple of more years, but still...preparing early is not a bad thing.
